ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: DAVID BANNER x 9TH WONDER

by petercortle | September 6, 2010

Mark this under “unexpected:” Southern tycoon David Banner hops onto a backpack-rap track from 9th Wonder. The result: Awesome.

9th Wonder is about as far away from bling-bling crunk rap as it comes: the organic North Carolina crate-digger got his start producing for progressive hip-hop duo Little Brother. As expected, the mainstream caught hold of 9th’s talents, and he has since looped beats for everyone from Jay-Z to Wale. Props to Banner for mixing it up BIG time.

And let me be the first to say, I hope this isn’t the last of a Wonder-Banner collab. Banner rides the beat like it’s his own, with a little more pep than the average Southern banger. 9th Wonder seems to have stepped to the occasion, of course, putting out a soulful but instrumentally-heavy beat for David to work his wordplay on.

Keep your eyes out for more work from both 9th and David in the coming months.
