MIXTAPE SPOTLIGHT: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS BY J. COLE

by petercortle | December 12, 2010

Don’t call it a comeback; heck, this is just a warm-up for North Carolina’s own J. Cole. So far, Cole’s career has been almost 100% Internet hype, with bloggers and fans raving about the lyricist’s intense story-telling abilities and keen ear for melodic production. But while listeners wait for the Roc Nation signee’s debut album to drop (we’re thinking early 2011?), the soulful spitter gave us all something to remind us why we loved him in the first place: “Friday Night Lights,” a beautifully crafted mixtape that ranks as one of the 2010’s finest.

This guy’s got more buzz than a hornet’s nest right now; take a listen to “Home for the Holidays” off the mixtape, catch some good Christmas vibes (or Hanukkah…or Kwanzaa…) and co-sign that kid Cole.
