LIFE CHANGING INTERVIEW: STALLEY

by petercortle | April 7, 2011

Ohio is known for a lot of great things — basketball, for instance — but the hip-hop spotlight seems to have eluded the state thus far. Up next to change the game is Stalley, a Massillon, Ohio rhyme-spitter with an already famous-beard, the co-signing of heavyweight producer Ski Beatz and a head full of knowledge ready to share with the world. Did we mention he also used to be a serious baller? Score one for Ohio.

Ladies and gentleman, the Life Changing Interview: Stalley.

LCA: Who or what inspired you to start making music?

Stalley: I had two consecutive injuries as a college player that left me reevaluating my career goals. I started taking music seriously. By happenstance, Mos Def heard some of my music. His encouragement was instrumental in moving forward.

LCA: What do you hope to achieve with your music?

Stalley: I want to be known as a great writer. My goal is to inspire people to think and, on a loftier level, to believe in their dreams.

LCA: How do you see your style as being different than other artists on the scene right now? Is it your fashion sense? Your sound? Your lyrics?

Stalley: My style from both a fashion and musical perspective is personal. That’s what makes me different. My goals are different and my understanding of success.

LCA: What has been the single most life changing moment that affected your music?

Stalley: Hard to say. I mentioned the injuries already, those were instrumental. Moving to New York from the Midwest played a role.

LCA: What other artists would you like to collaborate with?

Stalley: Kings of Leon and Bruce Spingsteen.

LCA: If you could change one thing in the world right now, what would it be?

Stalley: No more Asics Gel Lytes!

LCA: Anything else you’d like to add?

Stalley: Yeah, shout out to my hometown Massillon, Ohio. Go Tigers!
