In the 48 hours following the birth of Blue Ivy Carter in Lenox Hill on the Upper East Side, Jay-Z hit the studio to rap about his newborn daughter. Released on January 9th on Life + Times, the track is a beautiful gift to the power couple’s baby girl.
Between baby sounds from baby Blue (credited as B.I.C. on the track), Hov reveals details about Blue’s conception and alludes to alludes to Beyonce’s previous miscarriage: “You don’t yet know what swag is / But you was made in Paris / And mama woke up the next day and shot her album package,” raps Jay-Z before sharing, “Last time the miscarriage was so tragic / We was afraid you disappeared / But nah, baby, you magic.”
Despite the heartbreaking revelation, Jay-Z’s new track is full of joy, as he shows through the hook. “The most amazing feeling I feel / Words can’t describe what I’m feeling for real,” he rhymes. “Baby, I paint the sky blue / My greatest creation was you.”
You can listen to the full song on Life + Times.
