ACCESS DENIED

ACCESS DENIED

In 2010, there were 925 million people in the world suffering from malnutrition.

But, the human body is resilient; there is a rule that in any extreme situation, we can survive 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. How are so many people without food, an essential source of life?

I’ll ask a better question: how do so many people lack access to food?

The world produces enough food to feed 6 billion people, so how come there are 925 million people who do not have enough food? Access.

Due to wars and laws and government and other issues, food cannot be distributed in a way that is able to feed everyone. Something is definitely wrong with this picture: the people causing the issues are the people who actually have access to food and water and shelter. The people suffering are generally the innocent ones.

Another thing to consider about this distribution are the diseases due to it. We have diseases of excess and diseases of deficiency. In the U.S. the most prevalent diseases are chronic illnesses like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity. In various African countries, for example, diseases like kwashiorkor and marasmus are prevalent. In the U.S, there is an abundance of resources available to most. We rarely think about our water and food and shelter, yet for many, that is all they can think about every day.  When will be the next meal, the next safe shelter, the next drink of water.

At LCA, we want to make a difference and increase access to clean water for people without by distributing LifeStraws (making dirty water clean where there is no clean water to drink).
