THE GLOBAL FUND

THE GLOBAL FUND

In my last column, I mentioned the Global Fund briefly when discussing malaria, but I did not give it the credit it deserves.  The Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has been in the news lately.  The year 2012 marked the 10th anniversary of the creation of the Global Fund which over the course of its 10 years has given 3.3 million people antiretroviral medications, has detected and treated 8.8 million cases of TB, and has given 230 million mosquito nets to prevent malaria transmission.

To give some background on the Global Fund, members of the G-8 countries met in Japan in 2000 to discuss the need for resources and the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on AIDS in 2001 concluded with a commitment to create such a fund for more resources.  A permanent Secretariat was established in January 2002 and just three months later, the Global Fund Board approved the first round of grants to 36 countries.

As the Global Fund celebrates its 10th anniversary, it’s funding has seriously decreased; the last fundraising drive was a billion dollars short of its goal.  Yet, these diseases, AIDS, TB, and malaria, are still causing deaths by the million.

The Global Fund has always focused more on prevention and treatment of these diseases rather than finding a cure.  This could deter certain people from donating to the Global Fund if they think that their money could be better used in finding the illusive “cure”.  But so far, we have no cure and our best bet to save lives is prevention and treatment of these serious diseases.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation recently donated $750 million dollars to the Global Fund.  This is exciting because the Gates Foundation has spent most of their money in the past on donating to organizations searching for a cure.  The vote of confidence that the Gates has bestowed upon the Global Fund will hopefully encourage others to donate to this amazing organization.

Donate to the Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria and help save a life.
