Just Friday, President Obama named Jim Yong Kim, the president of Dartmouth College and a global health expert, as its nominee to lead the World Bank. On June 30, the current president of the World Bank, Robert B. Zoellick, will step down from the position, and Washington will pick the new leader of this great institution.

But I’ll back up- what is the World Bank exactly? They comprise two institutions managed by 187 member countries: the International Band fro Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). The IBRD works to reduce poverty in middle-income poorer countries, while the IDA focuses exclusively on the world’s poorest countries. These institutions are what make up the larger institution, the World Bank Group.

The mission statement of the World Bank Group is simple: help reduce poverty.

Dr. Kim is an anthropologist and physician who co-founded Partners in Health, a nonprofit that provides health care for the poor, as well as a former director of the department of H.I.V./AIDS at the World Health Organization.

The other co-founder of Partners in Health, Paul Farmer, stated “I can think of no one more able to help families, communities and entire nations break out of poverty.”

Let’s hope Dr. Kim gets the job as the next president of the World Bank Group.

(And not only is he a world-class development leader, but he can rap. Check it out here.)
