MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

by AUDrey | May 19, 2012

For those of you who don’t know, at the 2000 UN Millennium Summit, world leaders from rich and poor countries alike committed themselves – at the highest political level – to a set of eight time-bound targets that, when achieved, would end extreme poverty worldwide by 2015. These goals comprise the Millenium Development Goals.

The eight goals are as follows:

  1. End hunger and extreme poverty
  2. Universal education
  3. Gender equity
  4. Child health
  5. Maternal health
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS and other diseases
  7. Environmental sustainability
  8. Global partnership

While it may not be possible for all of these goals to be achieved in the next three years, it is amazing to see what changes have been made in the past twelve years. For example, in Ethiopia, now there are more than three million children in school and in Tanzania, education is nearly universal as a result of increased government expenditures on education and focus on school enrollment.

These are big goals, but even if only two of them are achieved, the quality of life of so many people will be improved. Every country needs to help- every individual should be invested in the Millenium Development Goals. You can start by donating to Life Changing Apparel to help with goals number 1, 4, and 6: end hunger and extreme poverty, child health, and combat HIV/AIDS and other diseases.
